Counseling in Atlanta for Culture, Identity, and Belonging

Shaped by Many Worlds

“When a man no longer confuses himself with the definition of himself that others have given him, he is at once universal and unique. He is universal by virtue of the inseparability of his organism from the cosmos. He is unique in that he is just this organism and not any stereotype of role, class, or identity assumed for the convenience of social communication.”
                                                          Alan Watts

Whether we recognize it or not, each of us is shaped by the worlds we inhabit.

  • Family.

  • Culture.

  • Community.

  • Education.

  • Work.

  • Relationships.

  • Religion.

  • Social expectations.

  • Life experience.

These influences help shape how we understand ourselves, what we value, how we relate to others.

Sometimes they fit together comfortably. At other times they pull us in different directions.

You may find yourself balancing competing values, navigating conflicting expectations, questioning where you belong, or trying to reconcile different aspects of yourself.

These experiences can be challenging, but they can also create opportunities for reflection, growth, and self-understanding.

Identity is More Complex Than Any Label

People are often described through categories.

  • Nationality.

  • Ethnicity.

  • Race.

  • Religion.

  • Profession.

  • Gender.

  • Family role.

  • Political affiliation.

Yet no category can fully capture the complexity of a human life.

Each person is shaped by a unique combination of experiences, relationships, values, beliefs, and circumstances.

For this reason, meaningful therapy begins with curiosity about the individual rather than assumptions about the groups to which they belong.

Culture matters. Identity matters. But every person's experience of those influences is unique.

When Different Values Pull in Different Directions

Many of life's challenges arise when important values come into tension with one another.

You may feel pulled between:

  • family expectations and personal desires

  • tradition and change

  • belonging and independence

  • responsibility and freedom

  • loyalty to others and loyalty to yourself

  • different cultural or social influences

These tensions often have no simple solution.

Therapy provides a space to explore them thoughtfully and develop a clearer sense of what feels authentic and meaningful for you.

The Human Need to Belong

One of the deepest human needs is the desire to belong - to feel connected, accepted, understood, and at home in ourselves and our relationships.

Yet many people experience periods of feeling caught between different worlds.

This experience is not limited to any particular culture or group.

It can arise during major life transitions, changing relationships, career shifts, evolving beliefs, or experiences that challenge familiar assumptions about who we are.

At such times, questions of belonging often become questions of identity:

  • Who am I?

  • Where do I fit?

  • What feels true to me?

These are deeply human questions, and they deserve thoughtful attention.

My Perspective

I was born in India, grew up in England, and later lived and worked in Hong Kong and the United States.

These experiences taught me that people are shaped by many influences and that no one can be fully understood through a single lens.

This perspective continues to inform my work today.

My aim is not to fit people into categories but to understand how the many experiences, relationships, and influences in their lives have contributed to the person they have become.

Therapy for Questions of Identity and Belonging

Therapy offers an opportunity to explore the many influences that have shaped your life and the questions that may be emerging from them.

Together, we may explore:

  • questions of identity and belonging

  • family expectations and relationships

  • cultural and social influences

  • life transitions

  • conflicting values

  • changing beliefs

  • self-definition and personal direction

The goal is not to arrive at a perfect answer.

The goal is to develop a clearer understanding of yourself and the life you want to create.
